Parents and family are a crucial part to a child's success; the parents, teacher and student must work together to help the student reach their full potential. Throughout my internship, there were several ways that I communicated and involved parents in the classroom.
In the beginning of the year, I make contact with all parents or guardians to welcome them into the classroom and assure open communication throughout the year. I will continue to frequently contact parents to give them updates on their child through phone calls or email. I will let parents know that they are welcome into the classroom whenever they are available and set up a volunteer schedule for parents who would like to come in frequently. I will also encourage parents to join us on field trips.
I will send out a biweekly newletter to update parents on upcoming events, important dates, a subject overview for the week, new units and extra curricular activities.
I will also have a classroom website that is both for the parents and students. This website will have pictures of students and their work, websites that have games for extra practice, upcoming events, important dates, a contact page, etc.
During my internship, I also wrote letters to the families in the beginning of the year, and when I started new units. I addressed what their child would be learning, why it is important, activities they can do at home to help, and websites for extra help and practice.

This is a classroom website that I have started, but have not gotten a chance to incorporate into the classroom yet. I plan to adjust it to the correct grade level and use it to communicate to students and parents.

Email to Parent
Hello,
I wanted to let you know about a situation that happened involving XXXX on the field trip today. When the field trip was ending, and we were all gathering to go to the bus, XXXX came up to me upset that his group was not allowed to go into the popcorn tent at the end. I explained to him that the line was really long and we pulled all of the other students out of the popcorn line because there was not enough time, so no one was able to go.
After I talked to him, he turned around to his chaperone (a parent from the classroom) and yelled at her for not letting his group do anything. I pulled him aside and explained that that is not the way we speak to adults and that she took time out of her day so that we could go on the field trip. He agreed to apologize to her.
We had to walk a couple of blocks to the bus stop, and when we were waiting for the bus, the parent chaperone came up to me in tears saying that XXXX continued to yell at her during the walk to the bus stop.
As a result, he had to stay by me for the rest of the trip. We had a discussion about respecting adults and how we need to be appreciative of volunteers because without them, the field trip would not have happened. There will be a field trip the second full week of May that another 4th grade teacher is planning. Before XXXX is allowed to go on this trip, we want him to understand the seriousness of disrespecting adults.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the situation.
